IDOT Highway 415 (NW Polk City Dr. & West Bridge Rd.) Reconstruction Project

by jgschreier 7/11/2016

Project Details
The Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) is moving forward with the Highway 415 reconstruction project scheduled for summer 2016.  The project includes road resurfacing of Highway 415 from the intersection of Oralabor Road and NW 26th Street in Ankeny to the west end of West Bridge Road in Polk City (the east end of the Mile Long Bridge).

In addition to the road resurfacing, Polk City has worked with the IDOT to install turn lanes at the East Southside Drive, East Pine Ridge Drive, and Sandpiper Court intersections.  These turn lanes were sought after by the City in order to ease traffic congestion on NW Polk City Drive in the area.

The reconstruction project is already underway with an estimated completion date set for October 2016.  The majority of the reconstruction process will be performed at night from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM in order to avoid impacting the majority of traffic.  There will be lane closures coupled with pilot cars and flaggers during nighttime construction.  During the daytime minor repairs and work outside of the travel lanes will also be performed.  Some weekend work may also be utilized, with typical construction times falling within the 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM range.  Daytime lane closures will be avoided if possible until after early September in order to avoid impacting summertime lake traffic.

What’s Happening Now?
Hot mix asphalt (HMA) overlay operations are currently in progress on Highway 415 and will continue to take place throughout October.  Nighttime applications of HMA are scheduled for October 15-16.  Depending on nighttime temperatures these applications may need to be changed to daytime operations, which would consist of work done between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Construction on the entrance of East Southside Drive off of NW Polk City Drive has been completed.  Work has now shifted to the entrance of Pine Ridge Drive.  This construction will continue to consist of turn lane installation and storm sewer enhancements.  Message boards will remain in place on both the northbound and southbound lanes of NW Polk City Drive for this project to alert drivers of the closure. Construction on the Pine Ridge Drive entrance is on track to be completed in October under optimal weather conditions.

Periodic daytime lane closures on Highway 415 may be necessary in October to accomplish clearing and grubbing activities along the roadway's foreslopes.  If necessary, daytime lane closures will occur between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and will utilize flaggers to direct traffic.

Local Benefits of this Project
Locally the road surface on West Bridge Road and NW Polk City Drive from West Bridge Road to the City limits at NW Lake Drive will be reconditioned.  Turn lanes will be added on NW Polk City Drive at the East Southside Drive, East Pine Ridge Drive, and Sandpiper Court intersections.  Aside from increased road quality from the road reconstruction, the added turn lanes will improve safety and help to ease local congestion on NW Polk City Drive.
