Polk City Parks and Trails are now Tobacco & Nicotine Free!

by Jake Schreier 6/9/2016

The City of Polk City is proud to provide the community with tobacco and nicotine free parks.  The City of Polk City has chosen to implement a tobacco and nicotine free parks ordinance to fully embrace the mission of our park and recreation system; promote community wellness and healthy environments. Tobacco and nicotine free park ordinances create cleaner parks, promote wellness, reduce exposure to tobacco, promote positive community role modeling, enhance park users’ experience, and help change the community social norms to discourage tobacco use, especially among youth.  A tobacco and nicotine free parks ordinance sends a clear message that we care about the health of our community.

As of May 9, 2016, use of tobacco and nicotine products, including electronic smoking devices, is prohibited in all City of Polk City park and trail property at all times.  This ordinance incorporates all forms of tobacco and nicotine products including: cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco, electronic smoking devices and any other product or item containing or resembling tobacco or tobacco products.  No person shall use any form of tobacco while on park or trail property, which includes but is not limited to; any park, playground, trail, athletic field and complex, shelter, restroom, green space, and parking lot areas.  U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved tobacco cessation products, such as the nicotine patch, gum, or lozenge, are exempt from this ordinance.

City staff will post signs in every park and promote enforcement via community education measures.  We also encourage the community to help educate park visitors about the ordinance. While it is expected community members and visitors comply, any person found violating this ordinance will be asked to cease use of tobacco or leave the City park or facility premises.  Any person found to continually violate this ordinance may be cited with a municipal infraction and a $100.00 civil penalty.

Polk City joins other cities in Polk County, including Pleasant Hill, Grimes, Windsor Heights, West Des Moines, and Mitchellville, who have also implemented a tobacco-free parks policy with the assistance of the American Lung Association. The American Lung Association is dedicated to saving lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease. If you or a loved one are interested in learning more about how to quit tobacco, you can visit www.QuitlineIowa.org or 1-800-784-8669.
