Police Chief Appointed to Polk City Police Department

POLK CITY, IOWA -- Polk City Mayor Jason Morse announces the appointment of Trace Kendig as the next Police Chief for Polk City. Chief Kendig was selected from a field of forty applicants for the position. "This the first time Polk City has had a need to select a new Police Chief in over 30 years" Mayor Morse said. He also commented "All parties involved have worked diligently to select the right person to lead the Polk City Police Department. I am excited for Chief Kendig to start in his new role and look forward to working with him to identify and meet the needs of our growing community."

Presently Chief Kendig is the second-in-command at Windsor Heights, Iowa, Police Department, where he has served for ten years, and the last five as a Lieutenant. He began his career in 2001, as an officer in Emmetsburg, Iowa, and moved to Storm Lake, Iowa, before coming to Windsor Heights. He earned a Master's Degree in Criminal Justice from Simpson College in 2014, and just recently completed the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command Course, where he was elected as the Activities Director for the class.

Chief Kendig has been married to his wife, Jerilyn, for 15 years, and they have two young children. He grew up in Elkhart, Iowa, and attended school at North Polk from 15t grade to high school graduation. Chief Kendig stated he is looking forward to moving to the Polk City area and having his children attend the same schools he attended.

The final stage of the selection process occurred Tuesday, May 17, 2016. The entire City Council, three Polk City Department Directors, and a panel of Law Enforcement Executives from Central Iowa law Enforcement Agencies interviewed five finalists for the position. Mayor Morse stated he was very impressed with the high quality of those applicants. After spending the day meeting with the finalists, the Council heard from the other two Interview Panels, before making a decision. Chief Kendig is expected to assume his Office by the first part of June, with a formal Swear-In and Welcome Ceremony to follow, details will be forthcoming.

Mayor Morse, the City Council, and City Staff thank William Moulder and Associates for their assistance in the process and their commitment to finding the best candidate for the City of Polk City.
