IA 415 and W Bridge Road

  Construction on the intersection roadway improvements at IA 415 and W Bridge Road in Polk City is scheduled to start on October 21st depending on weather.  The roadway improvements include removal of raised island on eastbound approach of W Bridge Road, sidewalk ramps, and construction of northbound right turn lane.  The roadway improvements are anticipated to be completed by November 21st.

Notice of Public Informational Meeting

Polk County and Iowa DOT have partnered to review traffic operations, safety and future corridor goals for IA 141 and IA 415, including the intersection of IA 415 and Beaver Drive in northwest Polk County. A Public Information Meeting is planned for Tuesday, October 9, 2018 from 5p-630p at Jester Park Lodge, 11121 NW Jester Park Drive, Granger, Iowa 50109. Polk County and Iowa DOT staff will be present to discuss both highway corridors under review. All interested persons are invited to attend this meeting and express their opinions regarding the proposed project.

Fire Prevention Week 2018

Mayor Morse proclaims the week of October 7-13, 2018 as Fire Prevention Week throughout the city, and urges all residents to be aware of their surroundings, look for available ways out in the event of a fire or other emergency, respond when a smoke alarm sounds by exiting the building immediately, and to support the many public safety activities and efforts of the Polk City Fire and Emergency Services throughout the week.

New Full Time Fire Chief Jim Mitchell

Polk City welcomes the city’s first full time Fire Chief, Chief Jim Mitchell.  The city announced the opening of the full time Fire Chief position in April of this year. Chief Mitchell was selected from a field of 30 applicants for this new position.  Mitchell has more than three decades of experience in fire service and had most recently been the Fire Chief leading Knoxville’s Fire Department.  The final stage of the selection process occurred on August 13, 2018 with City Council approval to hire Mitchell as the full time Fire Chief.  Chief Mitchell assumed his Office with the Polk City Fire Department this week and his formal Swear-In Ceremony will be held at the September 24, 2018 City Council Meeting.

Rock Creek Sanitary Sewer Surcharge

The City of Polk City would like to remind residents that a new $15.00 Rock Creek Sanitary Sewer Surcharge will be assessed for each sewer connection on utility bills this next billing cycle. This surcharge is in line with Ordinance No. 2018-600 that was previously passed by City Council. The proceeds of this surcharge will be used to pay off debt for the associated sanitary sewer public improvements.

New Fireworks Use Law

The City Council has passed Ordinance No. 2018-800 amending provisions of the ordinance regarding fireworks use in Polk City, Iowa. To help better understand the new regulations, please see the outlined allowed usage schedule below. Firework Use Allowed: July 3, 9:00AM - 10:00PM July 4, 9:00AM - 11:00PM Firework Use NOT Allowed: Any dates or time outside of the specified ranges Please remember that the use is only permitted on private property and is not permitted on public property. The legal use of fireworks is restricted to persons 18 years and older. We ask that you be mindful and courteous to your neighbors and community when planning the usage of fireworks to help make the holiday more enjoyable for everyone. Any violation of the written ordinance may be subject to fine. IA-415 & Parker Blvd Road Work

The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) has completed the road work on Iowa Highway 415 (Bridge Road portion) and the intersection of Parker Blvd. Traffic flow has been opened back up to two lanes with traffic able to utilize Parker Blvd. There may still be potential delays as painting is completed and equipment is removed throughout the evening. The City appreciates your understanding and patience while the Iowa DOT completed this project.

Bridge Rd & Parker Blvd Closures

The Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) will be conducting road work beginning 5/30/18 at 9:00AM. This work requires the reduction to one lane of traffic on Bridge Road between the area of Tyler Street and the Polk City Sports Complex. Parker Boulevard will also be closed from the intersection with Bridge Road to Phillips Street (local traffic only). No turning will be possible onto Parker Blvd from Bridge Rd or from Parker Blvd onto Bridge Rd. Local traffic will need to follow detour signs and utilize Broadway, Third Street, Tyler Street, and Washington Ave. Closures are effective until project completion scheduled 5/31/18.

Mosquito Spraying Notice

The Polk City Public Works Department will begin spraying for mosquitoes twice a week, weather permitting, until the mosquito season comes to an end. In order for a successful application to be applied, the wind speed must be less than 10 mph and there can be no threat of rain two hours after the application.
